When the weather outside is just too awful for your kids to play, you might be tempted to turn on the TV. (I know I am.) But this year I really wanted to try to spend more screen-free time with my kids, even when we’re all stuck inside on a blustery day.

Chess
I’ve been saying for years that I’m going to learn how to play chess. I have yet to actually do so. But it’s definitely a game I want my kids to learn, so this winter we’re learning to play! Chess is great for building critical thinking skills, plus it’s quiet. That’s always a plus for parents, right?

Minute to Win It
If you’re new to the idea of Minute to Win It, these are games that involve one-minute challenges using common household objects. Two or more family members each try to finish a task within one-minute. First one wins! You could start with simple challenges such as balancing styrofoam cups on your head and walking across the room. Charades
Charades is still a fun game, especially for kids. Just come up with a few visual clues, scribble them on notecards, and let the kids take turns trying to act them out while the rest of the family makes guesses at what they are. For young kids, you could use animals. Older kids might do well acting out famous events in history.

Playing Card Games
Sometimes the classics are best and that goes for playing card games too! Teach your kids some of the card games you played as a child: Go Fish, Old Maid, War, Crazy Eights, and Slapjack are all still pretty popular with little ones. (My kids played Crazy Eights for hours.)

Concentration
Do you have matching flashcards? Then you’re ready to play concentration! Simply mix up the cards, lay them face-down, and have kids take turns trying to turn over matching pairs.
