Spring Cleaning Tips for Kids

Most kids love spring! Spring cleaning? Not so much.

It’s no secret that it’s tough to get kids excited about cleaning in general. And if you’re trying to get your children to help out with a major home overhaul this spring, you might have an easier time herding cats.

So before you embark on spring cleaning this year, try to use these spring cleaning tips for kids! They’ve certainly helped my kids do their share.

Designate a specific task to each child.

Maybe it’s just my family, but I doubt it. Whenever I give one kid the job of washing dishes, at least two other voices pipe up “I want to help”. Then we end up with a shoving match at the sink. Not my ideal way to spend an afternoon.

So now I assign one chore to each child. That way, there’s no problem with “forgetting” their assignment or running into each other as they work.

Let the kids choose some music to listen to as they work.

This has literally been a lifesaver. Kids love music. And when you put music on as you work, you just end up getting finished faster.

When my kids get to choose the music, their mood improves instantly. Plus, they’re motivated to finish up quickly and have a dance party!

Finish one job at a time.

Okay, this one’s a little tough, but it’s worth the effort. Teach kids to start a chore and then FINISH IT.

Children are awesome at starting a task, finding another task they’d rather do, and leaving both half-finished. You’ll never get spring cleaning done that way. Have them work on a single chore and then finish it before going on. Add a tiny incentive as motivation: a gummy bear, a quick trip outside, or a nickel.
