I started Thinking Outside The Sandbox: Family over 2 years ago now with my awesome blogging partner Cat. You might not know that we also have a blog all about the business of blogging – Thinking Outside The Sandbox. TOTS was started because Cat and I both had small businesses we were working from home. We have been in business together for over 3 years and in that time we have sold our businesses, started new ones and sold them again. Blogging is now our business.
Since we work from home and are moms who solo parent most of the time it can be hard to learn new business techniques and get external motivation for our business. One of my guiltiest pleasures is to watch business minded shows and learn. I often joke I received my Masters in Business from Netflix.

Best TV Shows And Movies For Entrepreneurs
Dragon’s Den
A group of business people listen to sales pitches and decide whether to finance their business or not.
I never miss an episode of Dragon’s Den. Real life entrepreneur’s go in and pitch their ideas in front of the Dragon’s. Based on the BBC series of the same name and has an American spin-off – Shark Tank.
Atelier
Mayuko finds a job with a high-class lingerie manufacturer in Ginza. It is the story of a woman experiencing confusion, struggle and growth in a world with a new set of values different from any she has ever known and seizing the Japanese dream. Atelier is a workplace-based coming-of-age novel drama, written to present the story of a working woman, with the setting of a glamorous world of lingerie manufacturer.
Atelier is a Japenese Netflix Original drama. It was not designed to be an aspirational entrepreneurial TV show but the story is amazing. The adversity the small business faces will be familiar to any entrepreuner. I also had many marketing ideas after watching this show.
The Barkley Marathons
In its first 25 years only 10 people have finished The Barkley Marathons. Based on a historic prison escape, this cult like race tempts people from around the world to test their limits of physical and mental endurance in this documentary that contemplates the value of pain.
The Barkley Marathons may seem like another odd pick — because it is. But the story of trimputh and failure and the underlying message of pain can be surpassed to meet your goal is a great one for any small business owner.
The Women’s List
Director Timothy Greenfield-Sanders spotlights 15 women who define contemporary American culture; included are Madeleine Albright, Margaret Cho, Edie Falco, Betsey Johnson, Alicia Keys, Nancy Pelosi, Rosie Perez and Wendy Williams.
I have not watched this one – yet, but it came highly reccomended in a small business Facebook group I am in. It is on my must watch list. Plus it features Betsy Johnson and I have been a HUGE fan of hers since high school. I even did a presentation on her in 11th grade.
